Planning a patio: layout, levels and materials

Choosing paving is one part of planning a patio. Its position, shape and relationship to the house will affect how useful the space feels once it is finished.

Plan around how you use the garden

Sketch where you want seating, a table and routes between the house and garden. Allow room to move around furniture and think about how doors open onto the area. Use rough measurements to explain the idea, with final dimensions checked before work starts.

Consider levels early

Tell Marc about steps, sloping ground, thresholds and existing areas of standing water. These are site details to assess alongside the paving choice, rather than leaving them until the surface is being laid.

Choose the finish in context

Bring examples of materials and colours you like. Think about how they will look beside the house and how you intend to maintain the space. Ask which options suit the particular site before placing a materials order.

Check permissions for your property

The Planning Portal says that hard surfaces at or near ground level elsewhere around a house generally have no area restriction, but significant terracing or embanking can need permission. Listed buildings and local restrictions need separate attention. Front gardens have different rules. Check the guidance and your local authority for the actual proposal.

Read Planning Portal guidance on patios and driveways.

Get a quote based on your site

Include the approximate size, existing surface, access to the garden and any preferred paving in your enquiry. Marc can then discuss the preparation and scope your patio needs.
